Staff Profiles Childcare & Early Years
I gained my BSc (Hons) in Behavioural Sciences in (2002), on completion of this I started a 730 Teacher Training Course where I went on to teach in the Early years Sector and Health Care Professions. In (2005) I completed my Post Graduate Certificate of Education.
During my time at Calderdale College I have taught on the Foundation Degree as main grade lecturer and course leader, I am currently course leader for the second year Early Years Foundation Degree which is validated by the Open University.
I also teach on the Access to Health Care Professions Course which has strong links with the Early Years in respect of legislation and psychological theories.
I have my A1 Assessors award and also Qualified Teacher Learner Status all of which combine to ensure I have a range of qualifications which enrich my teaching style.
I have had 17 years’ experience in either a voluntary or paid provision within different childcare sectors. These have included working in day nurseries, primary schools, working in schools with children who had learning difficulties/disabilities and a school for children who had suffered different forms of abuse or had special needs to be met. I have been a link tutor within a local sixth form college working with adults who had a learning difficulty or disability. Before teaching at Calderdale College I taught as a course leader on a childcare course at Wakefield College. I have HND and BA HONS Degree in Childhood/Professional studies and a PGCE in teaching. I feel that the college offers a range of rewarding childcare qualifications and the practical experience that the tutors have within the industry shows through the quality of teaching.
I have worked in Education for 31 years. In 1981 I qualified as a Primary School teacher and worked in Primary Schools both in the Midlands and in Yorkshire. Whilst my own children were growing up I worked in several Early Years settings including running a Preschool Playgroup, a Social Services Creche, Children’s Holiday Clubs and Play-schemes and a Supply Teacher in several Primary Schools. I also worked Part Time in a Muslim Girl’s School teaching GCSE Child Development and Science. I have worked in FE at this college for 15 years, delivering a range of Child Care & Early Years courses and I have been the Course Leader for the Level 2 Diploma in Child Care & Education for 12 years which has always had a very high success rate. I really enjoy supporting learners to achieve this course which is the first step to a career in Child Care. I see many of my ex learners returning to college who now work in the Child Care sector to complete further courses including the Foundation Degree in Early Years. I am also the Teaching & Learning Champion for Health & Child Care which means I support and mentor other tutors in our curriculum area.

I have worked at Calderdale College for 15 Years as a Training Officer/Assessor for Childcare apprenticeships; my role means I am involved in the recruitment and support of Apprentices at the start and throughout their programme. Prior to this role I have worked in a number areas of the childcare sector so have some experience and knowledge of working in Nursery schools, Crèches and Private Day Nurseries. While assessing and supporting Apprentices practical competence It allows me to see how their confidence and knowledge grows during the course and them eventually becoming qualified childcare practitioners.
I have worked in the Early Years sector for 13 years in a range of settings from day nurseries to obstetrics. This has given me a vast insight in to early years. I have worked in FE at Calderdale College for 14 years initially as an assessor, and for the past 10 years as a tutor, teaching on all levels of Early Years courses from Entry level to Foundation degree. I have currently been the course leader for Cache Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education for the past 6 years. I also work for the Awarding body as an External Examiner. I enjoy the work I do and get a lot of job satisfaction from facilitating all learners to achieve their own success and move forward with their aspirations in life and work. I regularly update my knowledge through doing short courses, and reading appropriate journals and researching websites. My specialist interests are safeguarding and welfare of children, child health, food and nutrition.

Lora has worked within the Early Years sector for many years and has achieved numerous qualifications within this field, including a Bachelor of Arts in Early Years and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). These experiences and qualifications have therefore given her a broad knowledge of the childcare industry. Lora thoroughly enjoys teaching and believes the passion and enthusiasm she has for this enables her to inspire and motivate learners to achieve their qualifications and reach their full potential.
I gained my BA (Hons) in Primary education in 2005 after completing a child psychology course. My personal experiences of Higher Education inspired me to teach in the Higher Education sector.
I commenced employment at Calderdale College in September 2009 as Main grade Lecturer with the Early Years team on the Foundation degree in Early Years, validated by Leeds Beckett university for full and part-time routes. Additionally as Personal Tutor to a group of full/part-time students and undertaking placement visits within my time with the college I have coordinated and taught on both the BA and Foundation degree in Early Years.
After 7 years in the early years sector working in nurseries and primary schools I began my own learning journey which led to a teaching career as a Lecturer to further this career I undertook an in service PGCE which led on to me becoming Course Leader utilising my experience to make the course a high quality learning experience for students. I am currently course leader for the first year students on the Early Years Foundation degree validated by Open University.
From a very young age I had the passion and drive to work with children and young people and progression into teaching has been a natural one. The opportunity to teach others about childhood and utilising my extensive industry experiences assists putting this into practice; with the ability to explain and demonstrate to others how theory relates to practice through real life experience.
