Access to HE Diploma (Business)

The Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business is a qualification that prepares people without traditional qualifications for Higher Education study in a Business related course.

The Access to Higher Education Business is course is primarily aimed at mature students (19+). The course provides a direct route into Higher Education, with successful students guaranteed a place on the HNC or HND Business at Calderdale Higher Education Centre, although some may choose a different course of study at a university. The course will seek to develop academic skills and business knowledge in order to provide a strong foundation to advance to successful higher level study.

  • Areas of study may include:
  • Academic writing.
  • Research skills.
  • Business Organisations.
  • Business Management
  • Marketing.
  • Business Law.
  • Human Resources.

Thomas Greaves, a current Access to Business student said that "The Access course is teaching me to develop my academic skills to prepare me for university to study a Business Studies degree."

The Access to Business utilises a variety of speakers from local businesses who come and talk about their businesses, offering valuable insight into working scenarios. Students also go and spend time with big businesses locally to find out about their structure and the way successful businesses are managed. To help the transition from Access to Higher Education, we also encourage students to liaise with Higher Education Admission Officers at different universities and attend Open University Days.

Teaching is provided by qualified staff who have worked in the sector for a number of years. Their knowledge is constantly updated by training and they attend regular guidance sessions with the awarding body to keep abreast of changes in national standards.

Lessons are delivered in a variety of formats which include the use of presentations, workshops, independent research, lectures, class discussions and debates. There is a strong emphasis on independent study in the second semester to help students prepare for a Higher Education learning environment.

Course Leader profile

Manjit Sajjan

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires”. * These are qualities that I take as gold standard and aspire to in my day to day work. In my opinion, a good teacher should not only be an expert in their subject area, but should present material clearly and logically with enthusiasm.  Curiosity should be generated in the students around the lecture content, using excellent presentation and communicational skills.

I believe that good classroom management is essential to motivate students, to create a safe and comfortable environment student to learn. Mutual respect is essential, not only from student to teacher but also the other way around.

With over 14 years teaching experience, in a broad secondary and higher education setting, I have taught a full range of age and ability groups from HND to year 7 students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and English as an Additional Language (EAL).

My qualifications are as follows:

  • ·        Bachelor of Laws LLB (Hons)
  • ·        Post graduate Diploma in Legal Practice Course (LPC– with distinction)
  • ·        Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) inPost Compulsory Education and Training(PCET)
  • ·        Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS)
