Advanced Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People's Workforce - Level 3


This qualification is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children's setting.


The programme will give you the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Framework, theory of child development and assessment in practice.


Delivery can be tailored to you and your workplace requirements and can either be day release to College one day a week or total delivery in the workplace.

Annette Levy

I have worked at Calderdale College for 15 Years as a Training Officer/Assessor for Childcare apprenticeships; my role means I am involved in the recruitment and support of Apprentices at the start and throughout their programme. Prior to this role I have worked in a number areas of the childcare sector so have some experience and knowledge of working in Nursery schools, Crèches and Private Day Nurseries.  While assessing and supporting Apprentices practical competence It allows me to see how their confidence and knowledge grows during the course and them eventually becoming qualified childcare practitioners. 

Entry Requirements

It is essential you have at least ONE GCSE in Maths and English at a minimum of Grade C or grade 4. Applicants will ideally have a full and current Level 2 qualification in Childcare with at least 6 months experience. Candidates without the Level 2 qualification will be considered dependent on experience. You must be in paid employment for at least 30 hours per week as a important part of the assessment process involves evaluating skills, knowledge and understanding of the early year's practitioner role within a setting; you must also work across the 3 age groups i.e. Babies, Toddlers and Pre-School

What will be studied?

The programme is made up of mandatory units and longitudinal study.

Does the course lead to a qualification?

On successful completion of the FULL apprenticeship programme learners will receive individual certificates for: • Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) (QCF) • Level 2 Functional Skills ICT • CACHE Level 2 Award in Emplo

How is the course assessed?

The programme will be assessed by a range of methods which will include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or tasks. All the assessment criteria of the chosen units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass. All work is submitted online and via the Calderdale College e-portfolio system.

Are there any opportunities for progression?

Having completed your Apprenticeship at Level 3, you can progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services (90 Credits) or a Foundation Degree.

Careers and Student Advisors to give you the necessary help and guidance you need when you are progressing on to further and higher education or employment.

During Your Study

Before enrolment you will be asked to attend an interview with a Training Officer and complete a Basic Key Skills assessment. The results of this will be used to determine the level of support you will require to complete your framework successfully.
