The BA (Hons) Early Years (Top-Up) is for people who are working with children and young people that have previously studied to and achieved a level 5 qualification in early years/childhood studies.

Description

This programme provides a progression route for students wishing to be part of the graduate children’s workforce of the future and it will be a significant step toward achieving Early Years Teacher Status or Qualified Teacher Status should you wish. This sector is changing and evolving, it is envisaged that the new professional will be leading and shaping these changes. The programme team has worked in partnership with employers to develop a programme which is relevant and progressive allowing practitioners to further enhance their skills, knowledge and abilities.

This programme should challenge and encourage you to ask questions of yourself and your role and deepen your understanding of early years. 

Teaching

Content will be delivered in a variety of formats including, but not limited to; lectures, seminars, group discussions, practical workshops, self-directed projects and independent study supported by a virtual learning environment (VLE).

Course Leader profiles

Janet Holden

Main Grade lecturer full time Calderdale College Bsc (Hons) Psychology, QTLS Life long Learning Sector, Member of BPS. I have a wide range of experiences that inform my teaching, for example working with Social Services to set up group homes and work rehabilitation for vulnerable adults and those with mental health issues. I have worked with the education system in schools with children with severe behavioural challenges and have a special interest in autism and autistic spectrum conditions. When the Kosovan refugees came to this area I was asked to help get them ‘ready for school’ and I worked with them and their families in order to access the support needed for these traumatised children to achieve. This year’s teaching commitment is with the Foundation Degree in Early Years, Cache L3 Diploma in Supporting individuals with Learning Disabilities, Initial Teacher Training (Lifelong Learning) PGCE/CertEd and in the past I have taught on the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care and the Ba (hons) in Early Years and several sessions of Staff Development on autism, Equality and Diversity, Motivation and Stress and am involved each year in supporting and mentoring student teachers. I am the vice chair of the college’s UCU and I sit on the college’s Joint Consultative Committee where college wide issues are discussed with senior management and staff representatives such as the capability and sickness policy, health and safety issues etc.

Joanne Lockwood

I have worked as a lecturer in Early Years for a number of years, working across levels from Entry level up to Level 6. I have a range of experiences that I draw on to inform my teaching, including working in Children's Social Care with children and young adults with a range of needs including those with complex needs and behaviour that challenges. I have special interests in safeguarding, the outdoor environment, autism, and a range of therapeutic interventions for children with complex needs. I have a degree in Education, a PGCE for Post Compulsory Education and an MA in Early Childhood Studies. I continue to be involved with the running of a a setting for children in a neighbouring authority allowing me to stay up to date with practice development. I am an active volunteer and am involved with various voluntary and community organisations including the Scout association.

Kathryn Lavender

I am the module leader for the 'Introduction to Research Methodology' module and the double credit 'Dissertation' module on the BA (Hons) Early Years. I have a BA (Hons) in Criminology and Sociology and a Masters Degree (MSc) in Social Research and Evaluation. I am research active and have particular interests in teaching and learning in the FE sector, and adult learning in vocational contexts and I am nearing completion of a PhD in this area. Additionally, I am currently working on a funded project exploring the needs of former trainee teachers in the lifelong learning sector. As well as writing and presenting research papers at a number of conferences, I have co-authored a book chapter entitled Reflective Practice and CPD, in Ashmore, L & Robinson, D. (2015) (Ed.), Learning, Teaching and Development: Strategies for Action. London: Sage. I have also been working as an Academic Skills Tutor for Higher Education in the FE Sector since 2009, this role includes teaching academic writing, critical thinking and reflective practice.

Entry Requirements

This is a level 6 entry programme and applicants will normally be expected to have an undergraduate qualification worth 240 credit points including FD Early Years or related area, of which 120 should be at level 5. All programmes of study are conducted and assessed in the English language. Hence, applicants seeking admission are expected to be able to communicate effectively in the English language. Suitably qualified overseas applicants may be required to evidence this by achieving a minimum of International English Language Testing System (IELTS 6.0) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL: 550 or equivalent). There are no appointed placements undertaken in this course however there is the expectation that potential students either be in Full or Part time employment, undertaking at least three days amounting in no less than 16 hours voluntary employment per week in an early years setting. Applicants who demonstrate in their UCAS application that they have met the academic requirements, thought about the appropriateness of the programme, have a clear idea of their progression route and have the relevant personal skills and qualities will be invited to interview. Calderdale College actively supports claims for Recognition of Prior Learning. Applicants should also have a GCSE English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above. Those wishing to continue on to Primary Teaching qualifications following the course will need to have Maths and Science at GCSE Grade C or Grade 4 also.

Are there any opportunities for progression?

On completion of the course, candidates are able to apply for one of the many pathways available into teacher training, including the possibility to undertake a PGCE and gain a full teaching qualification which will enable you to teach the full scope of primary both key stage one and two. Candidates can also apply for EYITT accreditation which allows opportunity to apply for a position within Early Years and in some instances employment in primary school working with children up to the end of key stage one.
