BA Hons

Calderdale College is in the heart of a thriving and vibrant creative community. This one year top-up degree programme will be embedded into the creative scene in Calderdale whilst extending and applying specialist knowledge in a range of art and design practices. The aim of the course is to first and foremost deliver a higher vocational education course that prepares the learner for employment within your chosen discipline and industry.

Description

The delivery of this art and design qualification allows graduates to emerge with a degree award that develop their skills and knowledge. Using the modules to expand and gain discipline led explorations and experimentation to complete a qualification that has purposefully impacted on personal and professional development.

Teaching

Content will be delivered in a variety of formats including, but not limited to; lectures, seminars, group discussions, practical workshops, self-directed projects and independent study supported by a virtual learning environment (VLE).

Course Leader profile

Yve Houghton

I have an M.A. in Fashion and Textiles and gained my PGCE in 2004. I have worked extensively in the design industry as a Design Manager and Head of Design, and have been running my own textile design consultancy for many years, working with numerous blue chip companies including: Hilton Group, BT, Barclays Bank, Sheraton Hotels, Akzo Nobel, Renault, Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Dorchester Hotel, Skoda, International Wool Secretariat, Japanese Embassy (London), United Distillers, Peel Holdings (Trafford Centre) and Tate and Lyle to name a few. I have also collaborated with prominent designers and artists including Jeff Banks, Peter Howson, Michael Sodeau and Paolo Gucci. I have spent 15 years as a senior lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess a HND or Foundation Degree FdA (240 Credits) in a subject area commensurate with the programme. Equivalent accreditation (240 Credits) from attending an art and design related course e.g. successful completion of a Level 5 at degree including evidence of achievement in historical and critical study comparable to Merit grade HND or FdA. An applicant lacking the specified entry requirements may be assessed for Accredited Prior Learning (APL) on the basis of either other relevant academic qualifications in addition to successful completion of an HND/FdA/Pertinant Professional/Work Related Experience.

All modules and learning outcomes are assessed by the submission of coursework assignments and/or practical work at the end of semesters 1 and 2

Are there any opportunities for progression?

A range of postgraduate study options are available dependent on grades via the UCAS Website. A PGCE Postgraduate Certificate in Education is offered by Calderdale College in association with Huddersfield University. Students completing the Top Up programme can progress into a vast range of career options within the arts industry including textiles, fine art, graphics and illustration. Graduates will be able to practice locally, nationally and internationally - designing, making, showing and selling their work as well as pursuing employment within the creative industries. Career options can be progressed through links within the galleries, design companies, community projects, teaching opportunities and digital networking
