Business - BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate

This is a one year BTEC programme, designed as a stepping stone towards entering initial employment in such positions as, customer service assistant, office based work, general business or even setting up your own business.

Description

The course is designed to broaden your understanding and knowledge of business and to develop important personal, academic and business skills. For the 'Extended Certificate', you will study twelve exciting and interactive units over three terms, which includes the following 'Core' and 'Mandatory Units':

  • Enterprise in the Business World - Core Unit
  • Finance for Business - Core Unit
  • Principles of Marketing - Mandatory Unit

There are also nine optional units. Examples of these units include:

  • Promoting a Brand
  • Sales and Personal Selling
  • Building Successful Business Teams
  • Principles of Customer Service
  • Law & Consumer Rights

Throughout the programme of study, students will also study Functional Skills, which helps prepare them for work and their future careers.

Teaching

The delivery is classroom based using case studies, lectures, group work, videos and visits to local organisations. There is an expectation of a minimum of six hours private study per week, homework is closely monitored.

Course Leader profile

Ian Anderson

I have over 25 years industry experience working in Financial Services in Banking and as an Independent Financial Adviser. I was Director of my local chapter of Business Networking International and have many contacts in the wider business community as a result. I started my educational career in 2009 as a Training Officer / Assessor in Retail Financial Services before qualifying as a teacher in 2011. I currently lecture and am course leader on Level 2 & Level 3 Btec Business. I also have experience of teaching Fictional Skills Maths & English from Entry 2 to level 2. I am a College Learning Coach and have been involved in a number of focus/development groups in respect of the College Improvement Program.

I've been working in further education for more than five years now, delivering a range of business subjects including finance, marketing and business organisation and enterprise.

In my spare time, I play lead guitar in a covers Band called ‘This Way Up’ playing Weddings, Birthdays, Pubs, Clubs and Beer Festivals.

Qualifications: Diploma in Financial Services, PTLLS, Certificate of Education, HND in Business Information Technology, First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Education & Professional Development, PG Certificate in Coaching (with commendation)

Entry Requirements

An intermediate course suitable for those who have at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 3 (including English & Maths) or a relevant/equivalent Level 1 qualification, i.e. BTEC Introductory Diploma to include Maths and English.

Interview Process

An interview with specialist tutor.

How is the course assessed?

The Finance for Business Core Unit and Principles of Marketing are both externally assessed by examination. Assessment of other units of the programme is through completing projects and internally assessed assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Are there any opportunities for progression?

*BTEC Level 3 in Business Studies or Business Enterprise *Apprenticeship in Customer Service or in Business Administration. The course could lead to a wide range of career opportunities including: Customer Service, Business Administration or Business Management.
