This is a one year course designed to prepare you for a career within a Uniformed Public Service organisation, you will also gain a valuable insight into the role Outdoor Education plays in public service employment. The qualification is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A-C.

Description

This is a one year course designed to prepare you for a career in the public services. It will benefit those interested in pursuing a career in the Emergency Services, Armed Forces or other public sector roles. Equally, the course is an ideal for those with an interest or passion in Outdoor Education. The qualification is equivalent to 4 GCSEs.

The units studied for the course content are:

  • Employment and careers in the Uniformed Public services
  • Public Service skills
  • Improving Health and Fitness for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services
  • Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for the Public Services
  • Volunteering in the Public Services
  • Expedition Skills in Public Services

You may also achieve additional qualifications such as your Emergency First Aid at Work qualification. In addition to your vocational studies you may be expected to develop essential Maths and English skills. (This would depend on your qualifications upon entry to the course).

Teaching

Specialist tutors will deliver the individual units in the form of both theory and practical sessions. Presentations, group work, day trips, residential and guest speakers will all add to the learning experience on this course.

Course Leader profile

Kieran O’Connell

Kieran has worked at Calderdale College for several years. In that time he has taught across the range of levels 1 to 5 and is currently the course leader for the Level 2 Diploma in Public Services. Kieran, like the rest of his team, brings a wealth of industry experience to the course having served as a member of the Armed Forces and says “I like to reflect on my own experience of education and remind myself that everybody deserves a chance, this in turn motivates me to go the extra mile for my learners. The course is challenging at times but equally as rewarding, we have a professional & dependable team that prides itself on its performance. We use a range of assessment and teaching methods to ensue absolute differentiation and a fair crack at success, my aspiration is to see a positive outcome for every student that walks through our doors.”

Entry Requirements

This is an intermediate course suitable for those who have at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 3 which should include Maths or English, or a relevant/equivalent Level 1 qualification or relevant work experience. Candidates will also need a satisfactory reference from their school or current tutor.

How is the course assessed?

A variety of assessment methods will be used including written assignments, oral presentations, practical activities and demonstrations, posters, leaflets and an externally set Integrated Vocational Assignment.

Are there any opportunities for progression?

On successful completion of the programme (Merit or higher) you may progress to a Level 3 Public Service course or seek employment in the Public Services industry.
