ESOL Functional Skills Maths

If you want to improve your Maths skills or start working towards a nationally recognised qualificationand and English is not your first language this is the course for you. It may be taken alongside other courses or as a preparation for a vocational course. Study will cover number, fractions, decimals, percentages, measures and data handling. You will work to your own Individual Learning Plan at your own pace.


This ESOL Maths qualification is rocognised nationally by employers and will support you to develop and improve your Functional Maths skills. These are essential for all aspects of life and particularly employment. You will develop skills in all aspects of Maths including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You will also look at shapes and measurement and, at higher levels, percentages and rations. The lessons are delivered around key themes familiar to you in everyday life which allows you to learn how to use numbers in everyday situations. The flexibility of the course allows you to combine study and employment. The course is delivered by an ESOL specialist tutor.


Teaching is delivered using accelerated learning principles and the learning environment supports both individual and group work in a classroom environment. Activities include active learning and the use of ICT in the classroom where appropriate.

Entry Requirements

An initial assessment will determine entry onto the right level course. Additional Assessment for Learning will take place during the two week Course induction to ensure that learners are on the correct level to suit their skills, ability and previous learning.

Interview Process

You will participate in an interview with a specialist tutor who will include an initial assessment that includes discussion, reading and writing.

How is the course assessed?

Progress is monitored closely and assessed regularly through coursework and review of the Individual Learning Plan. Learners will also complete mock tests and the course is formally assessed by examination at Levels 1 and by formal assignment at Entry level.

GCSE Maths, Vocational courses that require Maths skills.
