Description

A mixture of business skills and knowledge is a crucial factor when considering future employability and/or career progression. A sound knowledge of the business discipline can be a desirable and highly marketable attribute in an increasingly competitive World. This popular course of study provides you with an extensive overview of practical and current business skills, which will provide you with a strong foundation of knowledge, on which to build a successful career. Modules may include Marketing, E-Business, Events Management, and Business Strategy, to name but a few. The student centred nature of the course may also facilitate modules being developed to meet the group’s specific subject preferences. The nature of the course allows you to gain essential business skills in addition to the knowledge, which in turn encourages more creative and innovative business application. This recognised and highly respected qualification can lead to improved employment prospects in variety of business roles, as well as the option of additional study in order to progress towards a full honours degree. This qualification is available to part time learners only. There is an expectation of a minimum of six hours private study per week.

We strive to embed a range of speakers throughout the course. Our speakers are both internal and external and may include learners services, other teaching departments, speakers from the industries such as finance, law and marketing. We occasionally include previous students to come and talk to current learners about their own experiences and where they are at now. As a College, we also strive to build links with the local community and businesses.

Teaching on the HNC Business is provided by a team of qualified staff who are experienced in their respective field. Teaching staff have been working in a number of business sectors ranging from finance, marketing, law and human resource. All staff endeavour to undertake all relevant training and ensure that their knowledge is continuously updated through training and attendance of key sessions with the relevant awarding body to ensure that they are well informed of any changes in national standards.

Teaching

Sessions are delivered using a varying range of formats and teaching and learning strategies. This includes the use of lectures, seminars, presentations, workshops, in class discussions, debates and role play. Learners throughout the course are encourage to be independent and autonomous, consequently there is a significant focus and emphasis on independent study, which combined with taught sessions will stand learners in good stead to achieve their potential.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should possess BTEC National Certificate or BTEC National Diploma in a related subject or two A Level passes or one A Level pass with four GCSE grades A-C or 9-4 including English and Maths or relevant work experience. All applicants will be interviewed, where you will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment. Mature applicants (aged over 21 years) without formal qualifications but with appropriate relevant vocational experience are also welcome to apply. If English is not your first language, you will also need a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or above.

What will be studied?

Modules may include Marketing, E-Business, Project Management, Business Environment, Business Strategy and Events Management.

How is the course assessed?

In addition to the varying teaching methods, we strive to embed a range of assessment methods to meet the needs of all learners. Some of the assessment methods that are currently used include presentations, written reports, reflective diaries, debates and production of electronic materials and leaflets.

Are there any opportunities for progression?

Previous students have gone to study a level 5 HND in Business, top up degrees at various universities and a variety of professional qualifications in areas such as, leadership and management, marketing and accounting, to name but a few. Students have also gone on to enhance their careers gaining entry and mid-level management positions, as well as more specialist roles within finance, marketing and human resources departments. The HNC in Business is a well-respected and recognised qualification throughout the business sector and as such, can provide a variety of opportunities to HNC graduates.
