    Course Overview
    This course will be of interest to anyone intending to enter a career in Hairdressing. This foundation level course is made up of various mandatory units which cover the following subject areas: Shampoo and condition hair, Blow dry hiar, Assist with salon reception duties, Contribute to the development of effective working relationships, Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety, Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas. The course involves substantial class contact which includes tutorial support, workshops and learning support.
     
    What will I need for the course?
    An Introductory course suitable for beginners. School leavers should aim for at least 4 GCSEs at grades E-G, alternatively the successful completion of the Entry to Employment programme. Applicants with no formal qualifications will be considered following the outcome of a guidance interview. All applicants will be interviewed and assessed for literacy and numeracy and will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and good communication skills. Applicants must be prepared to work one day per week in industry and one during the course.
     
    How will I be assessed?
    Assessment is continuous throughout the course based on: Practical observation, Oral questioning, Written assessment including mandatory written papers, all of which build into a portfolio of evidence. There are no final examinations for NVQ Level l Hairdressing

    NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing awarded by City & Guilds
     
    What can I do on completion of this course?
    The course can lead onto NVQ 2 in Hairdressing.

    Interview Requirements

    Interview with specialist tutor. You will be invited to a recruitment event at which you will be provided with course information. You will be interviewed and will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and good communication skills. You will be asked to complete a short written and dexterity assessment. You will also have the opportunity to talk with Student Services and Learning Support.

    Teaching methods include lectures, practical activities, projects and assignments, educational visits, external speakers and careers events.
     
    Key Skills
    You may have heard the term Key Skills. At Calderdale College we call these Essential Skills. The Essential Skills qualification covers the two skills of Communication and Application of Number The Wider Essential Skills are Working with Others. You will find Essential Skills integrated into all your learning activities. Developing your Essential Skills will raise your potential in all the subjects of your study. Essential Skills are developed throughout your coursework and tutorial activity. Every 16-18 learner and where possible adult learners will build their portfolio of Essential Skills evidence supported by their course tutors and specialist Essential Skills tutors.
     
    Key Skills
    All students are expected to provide their own personal hairdressing equipment and purchase a black tunic, black shoes and textbooks details of which will be provided at the recruitment stage. Hairdressing kit and tunic top must be ordered from our suppliers. Stationery will be required for the course.
