You will not pay tuition and examination fees if you are between the ages of 16-18 (under 19 on 31 August of the year of entry).
However, it is important to investigate the full cost of coming to college and make sure that you budget properly for your time here. There are a number of support schemes available to help you manage the costs involved in becoming a full time student.
EMA - Education Maintenance Allowance
You may be entitled to an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). EMA is a weekly payment worth up to £30 for students who are aged 16-18 and planning to continue in further education. For more information call Student Services on 01422 399367.
LEA : Local Education Authority Travel Schemes
If you are a full-time student aged 16-18 and live in Calderdale, you can travel by bus for half price with the Scholars Photo Card, provided in partnership with Calderdale College and First Bus.
Childcare for 16-19 year olds
If you are aged 16-19 and need help with childcare costs, you should contact Student Services on 01422 399367. Those 20+ may be eligible to childcare help through the Learner Support Fund (see below).
Learner Support Fund
Student Services administer the Learner Support Fund which provides help for learners on an income-based benefit. You should first check your eligibility for the EMA or ALG. Funding may be available for additional fees, travel, childcare and essential course materials. Please contact Student Services on 01422 399367 for information.
All learners pay a £5 fee for their College ID card and this card will be required to gain access to the Francis Street campus. (Exceptions are E2E, International Students Centre learners, 14-16 year old learners and community based learners not accessing the Francis Street campus. Other learners may be exempt at the College's discretion).
You will not pay fees if you are over 16 and on a Numeracy and Literacy course. (Speak to the College for further information about this).
If you are considering studying Language( ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages) you may be eligible for support with course fees.
You may not have to pay tuition fees if you are in receipt of income-based benefits at the start of your course. Income based benefits are:
Working Tax Credit (household income under £15,050)
Income Support
Housing Benefit
Council Tax Benefit (not single occupier)
Pension Credit (guarantee credit only)
Job Seekers Allowance
Asylum seekers who are in receipt of equivalent income based benefits
Unwaged dependants of the above & Jobseekers Allowance (income based)
You will not pay tuition fees if you are 19 or over and wish to complete your first full Level 2 qualification. If you are 19-24 and are studying your first full Level 3 qualification you will not pay tuition fees. (Ask Student Services for further details).
You may not pay the full fee if your course is offering a special discount to encourage you to enrol. This information will be made available when you enquire, apply or enrol. For example, examination and registration fees may be waived on particular courses if you are already entitled not to pay for tuition.
