Healthy Living Week took place last week throughout College and was aimed at promoting physical well being and nutrition as well as emotional wellbeing and relaxation. Learners and staff enjoyed the range of events that took place, which included fitness testing, a sports day, manicures and massage.
Computing staff and learners were particularly enthusiastic; not only undertaking physical challenges but also raising money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Working as a team, computing staff climbed the stairs of the main college building on Wednesday 12th May, collecting donations as they went. They managed to raise over £200 to help keep Yorkshire’s Air Ambulance flying and hopefully persuaded a number of learners about the health benefits of taking the stairs. After climbing 10,000 steps, to a height of over 2,500 feet, the staff are hoping this week’s theme is ‘Sit Down and Rest Week’.
Turning a healthy stroll around People’s Park into a fundraising challenge, the computing learners raised over £100 and agreed that it made them feel fitter. The learners challenged themselves to work as team, tied together in groups of eight, to complete as many laps as possible in one hour. They wanted to support a local charity that linked to the theme of the week and all agreed that Yorkshire Air Ambulance would be appropriate.
Throughout the week six groups took up the challenge and points were worked out by multiplying the amount of money raised for charity by the number of completed laps. BTEC National Diploma in IT Year 1 Group 2 made a winning bid by pushing themselves to complete ten laps of the park. However, they were beaten by the BTEC National Diploma in IT Year 2 Group 2 who were ultimately crowned champions.
