Year 11 students studying for BTEC First Certificates in Construction at Calderdale College’s Construction Skills Academy in Mytholmroyd have proudly shown off both their joinery and their driving skills at a Go Karting event which was held at Calderdale College on Saturday 15th May.
Twelve students raced their handmade wooden Go Karts in a Formula 1 themed championship; each kart was decorated to represent a particular Formula 1 team. The students from Ryburn Valley High, Sowerby Bridge High, Calder High and Todmorden High Schools have designed and built their karts as part of the joinery element of their BTEC qualifications.
Dale Gravenor, Construction Skills Academy Manager, stated “I am really proud of what the learners have achieved. They have taken this project and made it their own, putting all their efforts and enthusiasm into it and they have achieved some fantastic results. The event has been a great success with the students really enjoying themselves as well as giving their friends and family a unique opportunity to see first hand their achievements.”
The winners were:
1st place: Peter Green & Kallum Bates
2nd place: Ben Thompson & Marcus Burton
3rd place: Jordan Rice & Jordan Komarynskyj
Best on Show, Constructors Award: Ben Thompson
