Calderdale Council are celebrating the success of their recent Customer Service Apprenticeship scheme which was set up in partnership with Calderdale Training, the work based learning unit of Calderdale College and largest work based learning provider in Calderdale.
A group of 10 Customer Services apprentices were recruited in November last year to study towards their NVQ Level 2 qualifications and feedback from both managers and apprentices has been very positive. The apprentices are working across the Council in a wide range of jobs in departments such as Children & Young People’s Service, Adults Health & Social Care and Economy & Environment.
Andrew Bentley has been employed as an apprentice in the Council’s Human Resources department. “I am really enjoying my apprenticeship; I have been able to learn skills and gain experience that has improved my future employment prospects as well as improving my confidence”.

As well as gaining nationally recognised qualifications and earning a minimum of £95 per week, the apprentices receive support and guidance from an experienced Training Officer in their chosen Skill Area. They also attend Calderdale College on day release to complete their Technical Certificate, which develops their understanding of their particular job. Depending on GCSE results they may also work on Functional Skills such as Maths, English and Information Communication Technology which develop employability skills.
Impressed by the attitudes of their team of young apprentices, the Council is now working towards expanding apprenticeship opportunities. The scheme has meant that the Council are not only supporting young people into the workforce but are also gaining a motivated and loyal workforce that helps boost productivity and makes a difference to the services on offer.
Calderdale Training offers apprenticeships and advanced apprenticeships in a number of other skill areas including Business Administration, Beauty Therapy, Childcare, Electrical Installation, Plumbing and Retail Financial Services.
