Public services students take on the Lake District

    Date: 23 June 2010

The Lake District is one of the most popular venues for outdoor activities in the country and was the destination of choice for Level 2 and Level 3 Public Service learners who visited Pooley Bridge for their week long residential.

The trip was run and organised by the Army Recruitment Team who provided an action packed week that included: abseiling, mountain biking, orienteering, gill scrambling, kayaking and canoeing by day, and football, rounders, quiz night, karaoke and a bush tucker trial in the evenings. The students teamed up with their counterparts from Wakefield College who all took to the activities with enthusiasm, testing their individual abilities and also proving the importance of teamwork.

All learners discovered more about everyday Army life; the domestic chores such as pan bashing (washing up – by hand), sporting activities designed to push their boundaries, operational tours and their associated duties but above all, the camaraderie.

Student Alex Foster, studying for a BTEC National Diploma in Public Services, said “It was the best week of the year so far for me. The adventure training was brilliant, especially the kayaking. It was a rewarding experience which has encouraged me even more to join the Army”.

It was a great week for everyone involved thanks to the wide range of activities, the great food, and most of all the Army personnel who proved that a career in the military is a viable and fulfilling option.
