Art & Design students get creative for TDF competition3rd February 2015
Calderdale College students have the chance to make their design dreams come true, with the help of clothing store TDF.
Art and Design students at Calderdale College are being given an amazing opportunity. TDF is giving students the chance to design a screen printed T-shirt for their Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The winning T-shirt will then be sold alongside the major brands at their Halifax store and retailed at £20.
Not only will the winner have their design sold in store, they will also receive a T-shirt to keep for themselves and a £30 gift voucher to spend in TDF.
This competition took place for the 1st time last year and was a great success by TDF, College staff and students.
Danny, TDF Deputy Manager commented on the success of last year’s competition: “When we first did it last year, we thought it would be good for people to interact with. It appealed to us because it was fun. It gives an opportunity to the students as well. It created more online buzz than anything else we’ve ever done. We were more than keen to do it again, so we’ll see how it goes again this year. We’re keen to do more stuff with the College.”
Maisy-Ellay Varley, was last year’s winner. She produced a creative design based around a self- portrait. 30 T-shirts with her winning design were produced and these sold well, with only 4 left unsold. Since the competition Maisy-Ella has gone on to study at UCLAN.
Simon Dunn, Art & Design Lecturer at the College said: “Maisy-Ella has been back to the College to speak about her course at UCLAN. She’s studying Fashion Marketing and promotion. She was always very fashionable and trendy, so she was always going to be good at this.”
When asked why it’s important for students to take part in this competition, Simon said: “I think this is good because it gives them an industry link, it makes students realise what it’s like to work for a real client. It’s a great selling point to have on your CV, when applying for University and for work in the future.”
Art and Design Level 3 Student, Georgia said: “I want to take part in the competition, I think its ace and I hope mine wins.”
The closing date for this competition is 12:00pm on the 6th of February. From the 9th to the 12th February voting will open on social media, where you’ll be able to vote for your favourite design to win. The winning design will then be announced at the Calderdale College fashion show.
The Art and Design course at Calderdale College gives students a largely vocational experience offering them the opportunity to work on a vast amount of live projects throughout their time at the College, as well as the chance to organise and manage their own exhibitions.
