The latest knockout idea to keep students and staff at Calderdale College fit is weekly boxing lessons with boxing coach Martin Rose. Martin will be taking men and women through their paces on Thursday evenings in the dance studio at the College’s Princess Mary building, working towards Bronze, Silver and Gold Amateur Boxing Association Certificates.

“Boxing is a great way to keep fit and it’s something just a little bit different to keep people’s interest and keep them on their toes”, said Calderdale College Sports Development Officer Craig Waterworth. “Both men and women are joining in and we’ve also got several learners from our North Halifax Skills Centre site in Club Lane coming along”, he added. “The College offers a whole range of sports and activities to promote healthy living to students and staff, from golfing to rugby or Pilates, and try to encourage the fitness habit at an early age”.

Coach Martin Rose said “The awards course teaches the fundamentals of non-contact boxing. It can help develop flexibility, co-ordination and teaches fitness, self discipline and respect for yourself and others. Anyone wanting to move on to contact boxing will be encouraged to attend Halifax Amateur Boxing Club – a great venue with fantastic coaches. Boxing is a sport that anyone can enjoy. Sam Dexter, Further Education Sports Co-ordinator at Calderdale College said “This is just one of many activities and opportunities which we hope to be offering to local schools this year”. ”
