Calderdale College Barbering Students & Lecturers a Cut Above the Rest25th June 2014
Last week, Barbering students and Lecturers at Calderdale College went razor to razor at the National British Barbers’ Association (BBA) Awards, which was held during the Barber Connect exhibition at Celtic Manor Resort, Newport.
Calderdale College swept the board this year and won 'College of the Year' for the second year in a row and four of the ten finalists at the College came home with awards.
Level 3 Barbering students Asad Mahmood, 18, and Tracey Wadsworth, 41, and Level 2 Barbering students Joe Cook, 20, and Izak Lewis, 19, beat off tough competition from over 80 UK Colleges to reach the finals, where they went head to head against 30 UK Colleges and businesses at the BBA competition.
Winner of the Trends category, Level 3 Barbering student, Tracey Wadsworth, 41, said: “The last year has been really interesting and I have met some interesting people. The College is great, there are some really good tutors and it is a really friendly and fun atmosphere. I am really pleased I have won this award as I have never won an award in the 25 years of participating in competitions, so it means a lot.”
Level 2 Barbering students Joe Cook, 20, came second and Izak Lewis, 19, came third in the styling category. Izak Lewis, who hopes to continue on to Level 3 Barbering at the College and own his own salon by the time he is 30 said: “It means a lot, I honestly didn’t think I was going to win. The event was great and it gives you an insight into how other places work and what the trends are around the UK. The lecturers support you and they do their best for you. The course is giving me the skills to achieve, I have learnt a lot and it has been enjoyable.”
Barbers from across the UK descended on the annual exhibition to hear from inspirational speakers, watch demonstrations and learn about new products and services as well as go head to head in the annual industry awards. The British Barbers' Association is dedicated to raising industry standards, celebrating talent and celebrating talent and supporting the professional and commercial development of barbers, men's hairdressers and male grooming salons.
The Student Barber of the Year competition was split into three categories - Classic, Trends and Styling, showcasing the versatility of the rising stars of British barbering. Ten barbers were shortlisted for each Category and ten students from the College were shortlisted across the Styling and Trends categories. Winner of the Styling category and Student of the Year 2014, Level 3 Barbering student, Asad Mahmood, 18, said: “It is a great achievement and it can’t get any better.”
The judges included industry experts; Chris Foster, Founder of the Foss Academy and BBA Style Director, Matthew Batham, Editor of HJ Men’s, Erik Lander from Habia, Jonathon King from Denman and Roger Whitmore from Pro Edge.
Sponsors of the event included Denman International, Pro Edge Comb, Andis, Jack Dean Gentleman’s Grooming and the Hairdressing Council, The National Hairdressers' Federation and Habia - the standards setting body for Barbering, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Spa Therapy and Nail Services.
Daniel Geraghty, Barbering Lecturer at Calderdale College said: "It is such an amazing achievement for the College to win 'College of the Year' once again and for four of our students to win such prestigious awards in the national barbering competition. I am really proud that our students have been recognised by the industry professionals and have been awarded for their hard work hard and commitment to their profession. I am thrilled for the College and these awards recognise the talent that the College and Calderdale have to offer."
Michael Taylor, CEO of the British Barbers’ Association said: “A competition for Barbering was much needed in the industry as Barbering is a very new qualification. The standard is getting better every year, as is the uptake in Barbering. I was overwhelmed by the standard the students at Calderdale College are working to and the number of entries we received from them - it is nice to see the College pushing them all the way.”
