In an Ofsted Inspection Report published today, Calderdale College moved up a grade in three of the four subject areas inspected. Construction, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy and Art & Design were all deemed 'good'.

In Construction the report states "Students' achievement is good overall. Success rates in plumbing and electrical installation were well above the national averages in 2005/06 and improved further in 2006/07. The range of provision is good. There are productive links with employers. Support and guidance are good. Learners are very well supported in lessons."

In Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy it states: "Success rates are high. They have improved over a three year period and are high on NVQ levels 1 to 3 in beauty therapy and hairdressing. Teaching and learning are good. There is outstanding practice in some practical lessons. These lessons are particularly well planned and use a variety of interesting and enjoyable activities that motivate learners."

In Art & Design: "Achievement and standards are good. There are high success rates on the BTEC first diploma in art and design, and the national diplomas in graphic design and art and design. Almost all courses show an improving trend and are either at or above national success rates."

Quality of Provision and Capacity to Improve at the college were also deemed good with strong supporting commentary in the report: "Support for learners and the college's response to the needs of learners and the local community are good. Strategic direction is clear and partnership working is very strong. There are upward trends in pass rates. Communication is good and there is strong commitment and ability at all levels of the organisation to drive forward improvement. The system for monitoring teaching and learning is thorough and has enabled managers to accurately identify areas for improvement and share best practice."

The report also highlighted "good achievement and progress for learners aged 14-16. In 2006/07, a high proportion of these learners gained nationally recognised qualifications and 86% progressed to further education".

Commenting on the report, Tony Longworth, Interim Principal of Calderdale College said "We're delighted that the College has achieved improved grades in three of the four subject areas inspected. This is testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of all our staff. It is particularly pleasing that the College's vibrant approach to developing new areas of learning and planning for the future has been recognised and commended. We will continue to put our efforts into improving all areas of our delivery. This report, coinciding with the formalisation of our plans to begin repositioning and redeveloping the College in 2008, provides a very positive platform for our future success."
