Calderdale College has been successful in their bid for two funding awards with the aim of increasing physical activity in the College. This funding has been awarded by Sport England and the Calderdale Community Foundation.

The Sport England fund is aimed at creating activity within groups of students who are inactive and uninterested in sport and physical activity. In this case, Calderdale College are aiming towards females and students with a disability. The project will work to find ways to reach these students and sell physical activity as something that will appeal to this group, therefore increasing the health and wellbeing of the student population.

Commenting on the funding awards, Principal and Chief Executive of Calderdale College, John Rees said:

“The benefits of regular exercise don’t just include improving physical fitness but also help students to focus on their work whilst in college. Our aim is also to provide students with the broader skills to make a success of their futures, and understanding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle is a vital part of that learning.”

Mike Diaper, Executive Director of Community Sport at Sport England said:

“College is a crucial time in a young person’s development. It is often the first time that activity is not a compulsory part of their study programme and therefore all too many young people become inactive. This funding will allow colleges to be innovative in addressing the needs and desires of their students to help embed activity in their lifestyle in college and for years to come.”

The Calderdale Community Foundation has also funded an initiative called the Fit4Work Programme. This programme is aimed at the general student population, and uses activities which will benefit students’ learning as well as keeping them active.

The Calderdale Community Foundation fund has made it possible to educate the general student population on healthy living as well as provide them with a range of activities to keep fit and healthy. It is suggested that students partake in at least 30 minutes of exercise each week and these funding awards will help to ensure that this target is met at Calderdale College.
