Calderdale College Students Make the England Colleges Squad20th September 2013
The 2013 England Colleges squad has been announced ahead of the 2013 England Colleges programme and amongst them are three of Calderdale College’s students.
Brad Hill, Callum Dunne and Jake Smith have successfully made it all the way through to the England Colleges Rugby League team. The students are studying Plumbing & Electrical, Joinery and Sports Development respectively and join students from across England to make up the squad.
The England Colleges team have already seen some action on the pitch, taking on the Regional Academies Squad and Scotland U19s earlier this year.
In June, the students travelled to Nottingham for the Colleges’ Regional Championship event where they took part in a training session, playing against six regions, which determined the final 22 man England Squad. All three students were then selected for the squad based on their performance in the training session.
To get three students onto the team is a fantastic achievement and is a real accolade to Calderdale College and the students themselves. The rugby trio have high hopes for the year ahead; Brad explains: “We’re all keen to be selected again for next year’s squad. It’s been a great experience, especially being on TV! Rugby is a huge part of my life; we all play for Halifax and are supporters too.”
Lee Greenwood, Calderdale College Rugby League Coach said: “It is great for the College that three of our Rugby Development Centre students have represented the country in their chosen sport. This follows a successful season in 2012-13 where our 1st team finished as National Finalists, Yorkshire Cup winners and saw six of its players represent the Yorkshire Colleges squad. Callum, Brad and Jake have proved that students can successfully combine their studies whilst playing Rugby and training to a high level. I am looking forward to helping more Calderdale students gain representative honours in the coming years.”
