Calderdale College’s Rugby League academy team have been crowned champions of Yorkshire after beating Withernsea in the Yorkshire Carnegie Champion Colleges Plate final at Dudley Hill.

The Squad played with only 14 players to Withernsea’s 20 and were decimated by injuries early on in the match. They came up against some good opponents and the match could have gone either way, luckily they put in a big effort towards the back end of the match which resulted in a win. With all odds against them the lads played through the pain barrier and achieved a 40-26 win!

The coach Damian Gibson said “I am extremely proud of the lads, they dug deep and stayed in there, despite injuries and only 14 players. Special mention to Josh Baldwin, for working extremely hard and Calderdale’s SRL man of the match, Aaron Horner, who dictated play from stand off for the duration of the match. Well done lads!”.

This win follows the recent success of last year when the lads won the Student Rugby League and reached 3rd place in the country.

Elsewhere in sport, Calderdale College’s new netball team put in a great opening performance but eventually went down 41-25 against Rishworth School. However the stars of the day were the College’s women’s football academy team who had an amazing 11-1 win away against Boston Spa School.
