Three local businesses, subcontracted to work on the redevelopment of Calderdale College by main contractor BAM Construction, have been announced with more expected to be named shortly.

Elland Steel Structures, based at Highroad Well, Halifax, is to fabricate the steel frame of the college’s new teaching block and sports hall with fitness suite and dance studio. This will take four weeks to erect on site, starting in December. A contract to manufacture all glazing and curtain walling for the building has been awarded to HW Architectural Ltd of Brighouse. Calder Valley Skips, based in Sowerby Bridge, is to collect and recycle site waste. The contracts, in total, will bring in £390,000 business to the borough.

“We’re delighted to be able to share out the benefits of our college redevelopment with local industry and help to boost Calderdale’s economy,” said Denise Cheng-Carter, Vice-Principal of Calderdale College. “Two of these companies attended a supplier’s event that we organised earlier this year expressly with that purpose. These are early days in the procurement process. BAM is still in discussion with subcontractors and we hope to be making more announcements soon.”

Work began on site at the college’s main campus in Francis Street in mid-October and is on schedule for completion in August 2011, ready for next year’s new intake of learners. Calderdale College is self-financing the scheme to a sum of £6.6m and has been designated a grant of almost £1m by the Skills Funding Agency.
