Calderdale College has won a prestigious Matrix Excellence Award for the quality of advice, guidance and information right across the organisation. A team from the college received the award at a glittering ceremony at the Institute of Directors in London from BBC News presenter, Kate Silverton.

“This award is usually just made to specialist advisory teams so we are especially proud that it has been awarded to the whole College”, said Craig Tupling, head of Student Services at Calderdale College. “Applying the matrix standard led us to make organisational changes which ensured that anyone directly in touch with learners, whether teaching or support staff, would give timely, proactive advice to help students make informed choices about their educational pathway. The judges were impressed with exemplary use of the matrix standard in driving organisational change”.

Chris Jones, Principal of Calderdale College said “The Matrix framework has been a huge success thanks to the hard work of the team that put it into place. We now provide a more joined-up information and Guidance service to learners and we know that we must be getting it right: compared with 2004 when we achieved a target of 750 learners aged 16 – 18, this most recent academic year saw us recruit some 1,200 16 - 18-year-olds. It has also contributed to our improved progression rates for 14 – 16-year-olds, up from 86% in 2005-06 to 93% in 2007-08.”

Editor’s Note

The matrix standard is a national quality standard led through the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). The standard focuses on how organisations develop and support individuals. Organisations must meet various criteria through a rigorous assessment process. The excellence awards are held annually to recognise those organisations which are exemplars to others in how they support individuals in their learning and work.
