Dance students from Calderdale College so impressed a visiting dance professional that he invited them to join him on stage for an impromptu performance at the Square Chapel this week.

Bode Lawal, founder of the award-winning Newcastle-based Sakoba Dance Theatre, conducted an unscheduled workshop with the students earlier this week, after hearing about the new Dance Academy at Calderdale College, and decided that their performance deserved a wider audience. He has also invited them to join him at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London in April for a Gala Performance.

"I was moved by the students' attitude and their positive energy", said Bode. "They are very energetic, responsive and understand what is required. Their teachers, Peter Coenen and Lisa Parsons, have prepared them with excellent technique".

"This has been a very exciting week for our students", said Calderdale College Dance Academy Director Peter Coenen. "It has been very spontaneous and happened very quickly. Bode was extremely impressed with our dancers and what they achieved after a short workshop. Taking part in the Gala Performance with the Sakoba Dance Theatre in London will be an unforgettable experience".

Bode Lawal was performing his new work 'Okan Nijo', meaning 'One' at the Square Chapel. Featuring new dance pieces and drawing on the cultural tapestry of Brazil, India, China and Hong Kong, Okan Nijo is a journey of discovery to bring together the world's multi-cultural dance techniques into one creative language.
