COLLEGE COURSE TASTERS ON OFFER

COLLEGE COURSE TASTERS ON OFFER

Young people from across Calderdale, Kirklees and Bradford had a chance to sample courses ranging from childcare to joinery at Calderdale College this weekend.

14 – 18-year-olds tried out construction skills including electrical, trowel trades and plumbing, as well as sport & public services, hairdressing and beauty. Health & care, art & design, graphic design and dance were also on offer. Business sessions looking at customer profiling and buying habits gave budding entrepreneurs a taste of business courses and performing arts hopefuls worked from simple character building exercises towards a piece of improvised theatre. Two more taster days are planned next year on Saturday 7 March and Saturday 27 June.

“These are really worthwhile hands-on workshops which help young people to make certain that they are making the right choices”, said Chris Eckersley, schools liaison officer at Calderdale College. “Some may be looking towards an early start in employment with apprenticeships but others can go all the way to degree level here at Calderdale College. Last year was the first year that we ran these taster sessions and they were enormously popular with around 250 young people in total trying their hand at skills and finding out what is available”.

“Early entry onto vocational training combined with school studies can be the right course for some young people”, she added. “We are now into our sixth year of a very successful schools partnership where 14 – 16-year-olds continue at school but also attend college for one or two days a week to train and qualify in vocational subjects. It’s proved very effective at helping young people to get a head start in their chosen career before they leave school.”
