Fantasy Becomes Realty as Calderdale College Student Wins National Make-up Artists Award14th July 2014
Make-up Artists and MUA students went head to head at the National Make-up Artists Awards at the NEC in Birmingham; this prestigious competition is held annually and has several different categories that competitors can enter. These include bridal, glamour/evening, fantasy and overall winners.
This year’s fantasy category was based on hit TV show Game of Thrones; this part of the competition saw participants designing a new character for the show. The category was won by Charlotte Bottomley, Hair, Media, Make-up student at Calderdale College who fended off 37 highly talented students from across the country to claim the title.
When asked about the competition Charlotte said: “I made my character into a centaur and made all the prosthetic pieces for the ears and horns and then applied the make-up. It took about three weeks to complete. It means a lot to have won, I couldn’t stop shaking. I can put it on my CV and portfolio.”
Charlotte has been studying Level 3 Hair, Media Make-up at Calderdale College and is moving on to University this September to study Special Effects: “I have really enjoyed my course, it has gone really fast, we all get on really well and it is good because you have the theory, but you have a lot of practical to; so it’s something different every day so it is nice.
“Without this course I wouldn’t have been able to get into University, once I have finished university I will have a degree behind me, but I will also have a Level 3 course. It has also given me the experience; I can now make my own special effects, but I couldn’t have done that last year.”
Pamela Claire, Hair, Media Make-up Lecturer said: “As Charlotte’s Lecturer I was extremely proud and pleased because she has done so many competitions this year and nearly got placed, but this time it was really awarded well and she got an outstanding ovation from everybody in the crowd at the National Make Up Artists Awards. It was really good that she won in front of some really top judges, so I am really excited and proud of her. It was well deserved.”
Level 3 Hair, Media Make-up gives students a good start in a highly competitive industry. The course is packed with opportunities, and gives participants either the chance to progress on to university or the skills to head straight into industry.
