Former Calderdale College Student Carves out a Winning Future23rd September 2014
Former Level 2 Brickwork student, Joe English carved his way to success when he entered the European Apprentice Class Stone Carving Competition; held earlier this year in Freiberg, Germany.
This prestigious competition is held annually in various locations throughout Europe; the competition is designed to showcase the skills and talents of those who enter. Each year, contestants must complete a piece of stonemasonry based around a set theme that contestants are free to interpret how they wish; this year’s theme was Flora and Fauna of the Black Forest.
This intriguing theme left the doors wide open to an abundance of unique and mystical creations, but the winning entry of a bear was created by Calderdale’s very own Joe English.
Joe who previously represented Calderdale College at a Skill Builds competition in Barnsley sought his inspiration from his father: “My dad is a Master Mason so I have been carving since the age of 5. I then went on to become a member of West Riding Stone Carvery Association where I learnt more skills.”
Alongside this, Joe has also completed a Level 2 Brickwork course at Calderdale College and now runs his own building and construction company: “My favourite thing about the College was the Tutors; I got on with them really well; I also found the College quite easy going.
“The tutors were very professional and taught me a wealth of experience which has helped me to establish my own business.
“The qualification has helped me to gain more skills and the tutors have also helped me to gain more confidence which in turn has helped me to set up my own business.”
Brickwork is a vocational course and offers students a hands-on experience. It is the perfect course for students looking to learn a trade or head straight into industry. For more information on any of the courses taught at the College, please visit: www.calderdale.ac.uk or call: 01422 399 316.
