Fun Computer Games Day

15th December 2008

It’s not often that your tutor encourages you to play computer games all day but that is not the case for the BTEC IT learners. A special day of gaming was held Thursday 11th December for a small fee of £1 where students competed in four rounds to see who was the ultimate champion. The primary game centred around Counter Strike where students split into two teams with a dedicated classroom each, other games were also held in a stand alone classroom. The event was organised by Tim Paisley who is currently studying BTEC Introductory Diploma in IT at work. He organised the day to help raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, a condition which his cousin suffers and is understandably close to his heart.

Although the day was set up as a fun day there was still an element of learning involved. Part of the BTEC Level 3 course involves designing computer games so playing commercial games as well as the ones they have designed themselves is very constructive. The support between the learners is a pleasure to see, the games they have produced are evaluated by the group and some have placed them on the internet so other users can assess the quality and receive feedback. The tutors welcome and encourage this sharing ethos.

Congratulations to Wesley Mellor the champion of the day who received a £25 Argos voucher, and well done to all those involved who raised £32 for Cystic Fibrosis.
