Calderdale College is one of two colleges in Yorkshire and Humberside to be selected for an Enhanced Renewal Grant from the Skills Funding Agency, it has been announced.

The grant of almost £1m will contribute to Calderdale College’s redevelopment which is scheduled to begin mid-October and be completed in twelve months. The College is self-financing the project to a sum of £6.6m.

“We’re delighted to have been selected for the Enhanced Renewal Grant”, said Chris Jones, principal of Calderdale College. “It is a sign of the confidence that the Skills Funding Agency has in the college and in our ambition to provide skills and training for the people of Calderdale in a first class environment.”

The college has appointed BAM Construction, responsible for the landmark Rose Bowl building and the Carnegie Pavilion at Leeds Metropolitan University, as the main contractor. BAM has also worked on Leeds Arena and is currently heading up a restoration project at the City Varieties Theatre.

Thirty local firms have already been briefed and invited to tender for sub contracts at an event held at the college in August and there is still time for businesses to apply.

The redevelopment will include a sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio and all-weather pitch which will be available for community use. A new two-storey teaching block and IT learning resource centre will also be built alongside the new sports hall.

In addition, a new entrance and atrium for buildings on the west side of Francis Street in Halifax, on the present Princess Mary site, will be linked to the main Percival Whitley entrance on the east side by an external landscaped connection, bringing the two campuses closer together. There will also be a new entrance to the main site, partial refurbishment of the ground floor and redecoration throughout.
