Building work is underway at Calderdale College where students turned out to see the first excavations on the College’s old rugby pitch.

This is the start of an eagerly awaited twelve-month construction project which will provide a new teaching block, IT resource centre, sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio and all-weather pitch, available for use by the community. In addition, there will be a new entrance and atrium for buildings on the west side of Francis Street, a new entrance to the main site, partial refurbishment and redecoration throughout.

“It’s fantastic to be finally breaking new ground after all the planning and negotiations”, said Denise Cheng-Carter, vice-principal of Calderdale College. “The site has already been secured with hoardings and over the next few weeks BAM Construction will begin demolition of the old science block and portacabins”.

“We are intending to use the site as an educational resource for construction students and photography students plan to create a photographic record of progress from inception to completion. We’ll also have a 24-hour camera on site so that people can chart the construction themselves on the Calderdale College website”, she added. “There’s a real air of excitement that our new College is finally underway and will soon be providing a wonderful, improved educational opportunity for the people of Calderdale.”
