Higher Education Places Still Available at Calderdale College12th August 2013
Higher Education course places are still available at Calderdale College, and with affordable fees and small class sizes, the courses offer an excellent opportunity to gain a university-level qualification, while studying at a local college.
Isobel joined Calderdale College Higher Education Centre to complete a part-time HNC Business course whilst continuing to work full-time. She explains, “I wanted to have a career and not just a job. I was bored and frustrated working in pubs & restaurants, and knew that I could be doing more with my life if I just tried…Working for other people in small businesses for a number of years, I saw how badly some businesses were being run and thought I could do a better job!”
She felt Calderdale College was the perfect place as it was close to home, which meant she didn’t have to move, could continue to work almost full time, and was cheaper than university.
Isobel did not continue into Higher Education straight from school but instead decided to work full-time for a number of years before deciding to go back into education. She describes the course as well structured and feels it covered a lot of essential business areas which she utilises daily in her current job, everything from Marketing to the HR, law and management skills. Although Isobel initially found returning to education whilst working a challenge, she would recommend it and definitely sees it as worthwhile in the long run. She is full of praise for the tutors who were very patient and helpful during the course, and really pushed for students to succeed.
The Business course enabled her to gain a Marketing internship for an events management company in London, which has now resulted in a full-time job as an On-Line Marketing Executive. She has big plans for the future, and says “I plan to continue expanding my marketing knowledge, before hopefully moving up the chain of command and becoming a Senior Marketing Executive within the year.Professionally, I want to work my way up to the position of Marketing Director. Personally, I want to travel the world!”
Isobel would definitely encourage anyone thinking of getting back into education to do it, and her advice is to “just keep going…you’ve got to work for it, but it’s worth it in the end. Things will get tough but if you utilise the help and support at the College, you can do it…all it took me was 2 years and a bit of effort!”
