During the recent Ofsted Inspection, Inspectors commented on the ‘Outstanding’ outcomes for apprenticeships. Calderdale College is currently 10% above the national average with 81% of 16-18 apprentices achieving against 71% nationally, and in the top 10 percent of colleges in the country for 16-18 apprenticeship student success rates.
The College was praised for having ‘high expectations of students and apprentices, and promoting high standards of quality and performance,’ and enabling students ‘to acquire skills they need for work’. In addition to this, the inspectors also commended the College for being ‘highly responsive’ to the needs of employers, and for creating ‘a professional and purposeful atmosphere in which to learn’.
Andrew Rodney, Director of Business Development said: “Calderdale College are very pleased to have over 530 apprentices working towards an apprenticeship qualification. It demonstrates the value that employers now put on the apprenticeship qualification as a means to train, not just school leavers but also existing members of staff who are looking to enhance their current skills.
“It is very rewarding to know that since last September we have supported well over 200 school and college leavers to enter the workforce for the first time, by identifying good local employers to host an apprentice and matching the right individual to the vast array of apprenticeship job roles.
“Employers that have taken on an apprentice for the first time have received the national apprenticeship grant, a fund of £1,500 to help employers embed systems and support their apprentice,” continued Andrew.
Since March, the College have been supporting the 100 Days Apprenticeship Challenge and has been working with the National Apprenticeship Service, Capital FM and 20 other training organisations across Yorkshire and Humber to encourage as many employers as possible to recruit as many apprentices as possible, over a 100 day period which concludes in July.
Adrian Furness, Claims Director at Covéa Insurance said:“We launched our Apprenticeship programme with Calderdale College 3 years ago; they’ve been a great partner to work with and the programme has been a huge success. We’ve found that the programme provides an excellent route for young people into professional insurance roles, with 83% of our apprentices progressing into higher skilled roles and 16% going on to study for further qualifications. We’ve also seen really high retention levels meaning that for us and our apprentices, apprenticeships are a really effective and successful recruitment method.”
Employers including Covéa Insurance and Hipperholme and Lightcliffe Day Nursery will also be present at the Open Evening session.
