Josie Cameron from Oakenshaw received her Professional Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Level 5 at Calderdale College's formal graduation ceremony in Halifax this week.

Josie will be using her improved skills in her work as a counsellor at Ripple in Bradford, helping people with drug and alcohol problems.

"I absolutely love working there", she said. "Before that I worked for the Together Women Project for 18 months, counselling ladies with all sorts of problems. Some of them have gone on to be volunteers there themselves. It's hugely rewarding"

"The course has been brilliant", she added. "You find out about yourself and what makes you tick and that give you the tools to go out and help other people".

Josie was among a record number of learners gaining higher education qualifications at Calderdale College this year. 253 students, compared with 134 in 2008, graduated with Foundation Degrees, BA Honours Degrees and HNDs, along with high level NVQs, Diplomas and Teaching Certificates.

Four first class BA Honours Degrees were awarded, two in Graphic Design and two in Visual Arts, and qualifications were gained in subjects covering the business, creative, media, health, care and education sectors. HNCs in Construction were also awarded to nine students.

"Nearly all 253 learners are graduating in vocational subjects", said Chris Jones, Principal of Calderdale College. "They've gained higher level skills which fit them for new employment or help them to work more productively and competitively in jobs that they're already doing. Many will be contributing to making Calderdale a better place in which to live and work and we are immensely proud of them".
