Tea and books proved a sure-fire money spinner for Life Skills students at Calderdale College who have been fundraising for Martin House Hospice. The students have run a cafe and book club since Christmas, and invited Amanda Carter from Martin House to join them for a cuppa and to collect a cheque for £200.

"Part of the Life Skills curriculum is to support community projects", explained tutor Catherine Nethercoats. "All thirty of our students have taken part in the cafe and book club which have given them a chance to learn a new range of skills and to deal with customers. One of our learners, Leanne Maher, goes to Martin House which provides care and support to children and young people with life limiting illnesses and to their families, so everyone was keen that the money raised should go to them".

Leanne, who is 21 and comes from Savile Park, said "I've really enjoyed helping to set up the book club and my favourite job in the cafe is working on the till. I'm pretty good with numbers and I don't let anyone forget to pay!"
