Budding barbers are wielding their combs and scissors thanks to a new course at the North Halifax Skills Centre in Club Lane and at Calderdale College in Francis Street.

The level 2 one-year course runs on Monday and Tuesday evenings and has attracted a range of learners, from complete novices to experienced hairdressers who are already working in salons and eager to top up their skills.

“The days when barbering meant a short back and sides are long gone and we’ll be giving our students a thorough grounding in current hair trends, including shaved patterns, as well as in cutting or shaving facial hair”, explained Melanie Stott, tutor at the North Halifax Skills Centre which is part of Calderdale College. “Barbering requires a completely different set of skills from cutting women’s hair.”

Student barber, Jordan Varley, 17, said “It’s unusual to find a course that just concentrates on men’s hair and that’s what I want to specialise in. I’ve been cutting hair since I left school and do my brother’s every week. My grand plan is to work abroad. You can take these skills anywhere”.

Twelve learners have already signed up for the new course at the Skills Centre and fourteen at the main College. Clients are invited to come along for a free haircut at the North Halifax Skills Centre, ringing 01422 360901 first for an appointment. The Full Works Salon at Calderdale College is taking bookings on 01422 399355.
