A new Creative & Media Diploma for 16 – 19-year-olds is being launched at Calderdale College to begin this September.

The new qualification, successfully piloted by the Government this year, is designed to allow learners to explore different areas of the creative and media industry before choosing where to specialise.

The Diploma, developed in partnership with the creative and media industry by Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for Creative Media, offers a broad range of subjects including film, photography, graphics, fashion, music production, performing arts and dance. Learners with five GCSEs can take a two-year course to gain a Level 3 qualification, the equivalent of three and a half A-Levels, and progress into higher education or work. Those without will begin at Levels 1 or 2.

Calderdale College will also be offering animation and games design for the first time, taught in master classes by BAFTA award winner Andrew Walker, former head artist at Rockstar Leeds which developed Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.

“This new course is ideal for young people wanting to work in the industry but not yet sure what the options are and where their strengths lie”, explained Carol South, programme manager for Performance and Creative Arts at Calderdale College. “The fact that it’s been developed by the industry itself is crucial. It means that it’s designed to equip future workers in this growth sector with the skills that are really needed either as employees or in their own enterprises. The Creative & Media Diploma is a very useful and practical option for many students and we expect it to be very popular. ”
