Calderdale College has appointed Maryke Deahl to the new role of Higher Education Manager in support of its increased offer of degree level courses. Mrs Deahl, formerly Deputy Head of Bradford College’s Business School, lives in Warley and has significant experience of developing employer-led programmes.

“Our new Foundation Degrees in Business, Financial Services, Retail and Design Practice have been designed to match industry needs and will be on offer next year”, she explained. “They are flexible and can incorporate work-based learning for those already in employment but can also be college-based. All are run in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University.”

“Foundation Degrees already in place are the highly successful Early Years Foundation Degree, now completing its first year, and Performance Management which starts this September. We also have a number of BA (Hons) degree courses already up and running including Graphic Design, Business Studies, Visual Arts and Performing Arts. The reputation of some of these courses is such that they are bringing in students from outside the region who are basing themselves in Halifax. We’ve already had a lot of interest in a new BA in Dance at our Dance Academy, scheduled for 2009.”

Chris Jones, Principal of Calderdale College added “FE Colleges have a key role to play in improving the prosperity of the locality by offering higher level courses. We are one of the first colleges to have undergone a review by IQER, a new process set up by the Quality Assurance Agency to assure the quality of degree courses delivered by colleges. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with ten areas of good practice cited and learners emphasising the high levels of support given by our tutors. This is a very firm base on which to continue to expand our Higher Education programme”.
