Olympic Visit to the College30th April 2012
Staff and students took part in a Sports Makers event last week. Former Olympic gymnast and diver Helen Galashan came into College to talk about the important role volunteers play in sports and the Olympics.
Helen explained to students how volunteers had helped her throughout her career from her early days with volunteers helping in sports centres to helping her achieve her diving dreams by volunteering at competitions and practice sessions.
Helen explained about the training and discipline involved in becoming a world class athlete and the help and support necessary from a wide range of people to succeed in all areas of sport. Helen encouraged students and staff to sign up for the Sports Makers scheme which has been set up as part of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic sports legacy.
Students were encouraged to sign up for a number of volunteer roles in the community. As an added incentive to volunteers if students complete 10 hours of volunteering they will entered into Sport England’s Ticketshare draw for one of hundreds of pairs of tickets to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Further details of the scheme can be found on the Sports Maker website.
