Stunning images taken by photography students at Calderdale College are featuring in the March issue of Vogue and April edition of Red magazine after they completed a challenging assignment for a local jewellery designer.

HND Photography students John Sykes and Justin Taylor were given a professional brief by Amanda Cox Jewellery of Hebden Bridge to photograph her Lily range which incorporates freshwater pearls of varying hues, set in silver. The range is available through selected shops and galleries throughout the UK and Ireland and Amanda sells mainly to the trade through top range glossy magazines and trade shows.

"The photos not only had to be good enough to appear in Vogue, but also to be blown up to huge dimensions for banners at trade fairs in Earls Court and Harrogate", explained photography tutor Catherine Powter. "The assignment was distinguished but incredibly demanding and John and Justin were dedicated to producing high quality images. They pushed their own boundaries and took on something really difficult which had to be just right. Not many photographic students could put Vogue on their CV!"

"Photographing the jewellery without reflections was exceptionally challenging and required a lot of ingenuity with lighting and angles", said John Sykes. "It was frustrating at times but made us come up with creative solutions and we've learnt a lot from it. We used a variety of materials for the backgrounds, including brushed aluminium sheeting, which gave off pink and green lights and enhanced the colours in the jewellery. Amanda is delighted with the results and that's what counts."

Amanda Cox added "I'm very impressed with what John and Justin have produced. Jewellery photography is a very specialised area and my designs are aimed at the top end of the market so nothing less than perfect will do."
