A team of 10 Bricklaying learners from Calderdale College swapped shovels for sweatbands as they raised money for Sport Relief this week.

The students completed a 24hr indoor cycling challenge as well as competing in a 24hr table tennis match at the College’s North Halifax Skills Centre based in Ovenden. They are currently studying for Level 2 Diplomas within the North Halifax Construction Skills Academy.

The gruelling event began on Thursday morning and the learners were joined by three members of staff; who were suitably dressed for the occasion. Principal Chris Jones paid a visit to support the learners and to show off his table tennis skills.

Tutor and Academy Co-ordinator Andy Jowett said, “The students who did this don't usually do any form of exercise so it was a big challenge for them but they were more than willing to give their time and effort. Most of these learners struggle financially themselves and come from the local area which has a high level of unemployment. So for these learners to put something back into society is a lesson for us all”.

North Halifax Skills Centre Learners are keen fundraisers, having raised almost £1000 for charity this academic year. They are hoping to raise over £300 for Sport Relief 2010.
