Halifax Minster recently played host to Education Sunday a specially themed day which takes place in churches across the UK. It is a day of recognition of the importance of education and a time of celebration and prayer. This year marks the third year of the event in the town as well as the first time that it is held in the newly acknowledged Minster.

This year’s theme is further and higher education and Calderdale College has been invited to take a leading role. Hilary Barber, vicar of Halifax explains:

“Education plays such an important role in people’s lives and in the wealth, prosperity of the Borough so it is highly appropriate for the Minster to give thought and prayers to those involved in education within Calderdale and in particular this year to Calderdale College”

The congregation will hear readings from both the student body and staff population when Alex Foster, President of the Student Union and Karen Porter, Curriculum Co-ordinator 14-19 Learning and Skills take to the lecturn. During the service there will be a special choreographed contemporary dance performance entitled ‘God is Able’ by the students of the College’s Dance Academy. The service is set to culminate with Beauty learners treating church members to hand massages and nail manicures reinforcing the revitalising message of attending Church.

Chris Jones, Principal of Calderdale College, is proud to take part in the day’s celebrations: “Education Sunday gives an opportunity to display and celebrate the talents of Calderdale’s students and also to recognise the commitment and dedication of the teachers and others who support and encourage them.”

If you are interested in attending the service it is at Halifax Minster, Sunday 7th February, starting at 10.30am.
