Prospectus Wins Publication of the Year at the Public Sector Communications Awards 2012

The Public Sector Communication Awards took place on Tuesday 20th November at The Comedy Store in Manchester and was hosted by BBC Radio Manchester’s Andy Crane and featured 20 categories, as well as The Grand Prix Award.

Calderdale College went head to head with seven public sector organisations from across the country to win Publication of the Year. The college fought off tough competition from South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, All Together NOW, Community Gateway Association, Horsham District Council, Medway Council, Northumberland County Council and Portsmouth City Council.

The concept and design was produced in-house by Richard Griffin the College Graphic Designer, taking into account feedback from focus groups and surveys carried out with student representatives and stakeholders. The creative aim of the prospectus was to capture the life of the College in an exciting and interesting way; this had to be balanced with the primary aim of the prospectus to provide information about the courses we offer.

Chris Jones, Principal at Calderdale College said: “Our student centred approach continues to inform practice in every area of the college, including Marketing. This award proves that a creative in-house team informed and supported by our students, can produce state of the art resources, inform and attract new students and make a difference to the College and the local community.”

Michael Ainsworth, Marketing Manager said: “The previous A4 prospectus was visually attractive, but feedback received highlighted it was ‘too precious’ and ‘too big’ which put some students off from taking copies. This feedback went into the new design, size and choice of paper stock.”

“We also produced a very successful online version of the prospectus allowing prospective students to customize their very own prospectus giving them an option to view it online or download and print it out in print friendly manner.”

“Our prospectus allows students to gain an insight into life at Calderdale College and the courses we offer, however our open evenings allow prospective learners to get up, close and personal with the College and actually have a go at a subject they are interested in. We have managed to effectively combine the two which now work in harmony to aid students with everything they may need to make an informed decision,” continued Michael.

Results

  • The prospectus has nearly tripled the attendance at open evenings by almost 30% and doubled the initial objective projections of 15%.  
  • Out of a survey of 150 new students 75% said the prospectus had influenced their decision to apply.
  • Applications for 16-18 increased by 14%.
