Beauty therapy was one of the skills demonstrated by learners and staff at the North Halifax Skills Centre when they threw open their doors to the local community this week.

Hairdressing and construction skills were also on offer at the centre in Club Lane, which is run by Calderdale College to provide ‘on-the-doorstep’ courses for people in North Halifax.

“This has been a practical day with visitors having the chance to try their own hand at bricklaying, joinery, plastering, beauty therapy or hairdressing”, said Ruth Stead, Manager of the North Halifax Skills Centre. “We have a lot of introductory and levels 1 and 2 courses starting in September for people wanting a new start or to get back into work after a break”, she continued. “We opened a new dedicated Construction Skills Centre here in January which has more than trebled our capacity and this really is a fantastic training opportunity for people in this part of Halifax.”

Sam Drake from Lee Mount has just completed her level 1 beauty qualification at the North Halifax Skills Centre and is now planning to progress on to level 2 at the main college in Francis Street. “Starting off at the main college could be quite daunting for some people”, she said. It’s been really easy to come here to study, so close to home”.
