Students were encouraged to try out new sports and adopt a healthier lifestyle during Healthy Living Week at Calderdale College.

A week-long programme of activities included workshops on stress management and healthy eating, exercising to music with the College's Dance Academy and the opportunity to learn disc sports and take part in Shoufukan, a 16th century Japanese Martial Art.

Calderdale Primary Care Trust gave out information on sexual health, breast and testicular cancer awareness and there were visits from fitness clubs and Suma Wholefoods with fresh fruit given away by The Good Food Stores. Halifax Golf Club provided students and staff with the chance to compete in a 9-hole golf challenge.

"We're trying to get across the message that healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand and to get our young people to think about the choices that they make in what they eat and how much exercise they take"ÂÂ, said Craig Waterworth, Sports Development Officer at Calderdale College. "The chance to try something new makes it all the more fun. This is the first time that we've had disc sports specialists in and they've opened it right up for students with 'Ultrastars', 'Buzzes', 'Drivers' and the games of 'Ultimate' and 'Disc Golf'. It goes way beyond just throwing a frisbee!".
