Life Skills students from Calderdale College raised a whopping £500 for the Forget Me Not Trust with a ‘Mad May Day’ event. Margaret Chapman of the Trust met the students to receive a cheque, hear about their efforts for the children’s respite centre and hospice and to explain how the money would be used.

The eleven students, currently working on a community programme at Pennine Magpie as part of the Skills for Working Life curriculum, organised games, bring and buy stalls and spent several days baking to raise the money.

“It was a fantastic, busy day and went far beyond our expectations”, said tutor Mavis Buckley. “The students’ confidence went through the roof. Everyone worked very hard and everyone had a job to do running stalls and games. They were very keen that the money raised should go towards helping children in Calderdale and Kirklees.” Student Malcolm Burnside added, “It was hard work but we made a lot of money and had fun as well”.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for all their hard work”, said Margaret Chapman of the Forget me Not Trust. “We now have planning approval for the hospice and are in the process of purchasing the land. We’re hoping to be able to make an announcement very soon that we can start building. We still need to raise another two million pounds to build the hospice and 1.5 million pounds a year to run it so everybody’s efforts are really important to us.”
