Students visit site19th January 2011
The first set of learners on the combined training plan established between Calderdale College and BAM Construction have visited the new build site.
Fifteen HNC Construction learners made their first visit to the College’s Building our Future site. The group undertook a comprehensive tour which included the sport pitch, sports hall and the science block. The main point of interest was the steel erection of phase 2, where students observed the unloading of the steel girders prior to their fitting.
Keen to show the learners different aspects and construction techniques Site Supervisor Chris Gallagher demonstrated the new technology used for the flooring of the science block. This compromises of a steel mesh, resembling corregated metal, being laid with concrete placed on top rather than solid concrete slabs. Improvements like these are safer and much more efficient taking weeks off the construction process.
The students happily asked questions regarding the construction and the management of the site, from weather setbacks to waste management. Neil Stephenson, one of the learners, who had worked in construction trade for 21 years as a steel erecter was particularly interested in the development of the site. “The visit was great it puts the theory into practice, it is a real opportunity for all of us.”
In the coming weeks and months learners studying joinery, brickwork, electrical, painting and decorating, plumbing and plastering will be visiting the site as part of the approved training plan.
