Suzy Jackson is celebrating being the first to gain a first class Honours Degree in Performance Arts from Calderdale College.

Suzy, 27, whose family lives in Greetland, is a former pupil of Brooksbank School. She moved to London to train as a dancer when she was 18, but an injury sustained falling off a ladder during a pantomime performance persuaded her to move back up North to teach dance and to enrol on the BA (Hons) Top-up Degree in Performance Arts. The drama-led course is now in its second year at Calderdale College and validated by Leeds Metropolitan University. It makes full use of the purpose-built theatre in the college’s recently opened Creative & Conservation Skills Centre which was funded by Action Halifax.

“The course has been absolutely fantastic - very intensive and very practical”, she said. “I’ve done two plays which have been full on and physically demanding and given me very valuable experience. My next step is to look for TV work.”

Neil Horsfield, Head of Performing Arts at Calderdale College said “Suzy is truly an exceptional student and one of the best I’ve ever taught. It’s rare to find such a good all-rounder. It was a steep learning curve for her coming from a dance background but she’s highly organised and professional and works extremely hard. She crammed an enormous amount into her 32 weeks of study and deserves her First Class degree. Her two productions: ‘Frozen’ and ‘After the End’ were outstanding.”

Suzy is currently working on a production for the Edinburgh Fringe with fellow Calderdale College Performing Arts graduates.
