Calderdale College celebrated VQ Day 2009 with its first award ceremony, in front of a full house at the Square Chapel. VQ Day is a national celebration of achievement in vocational qualifications and recognition of the important role that they play in the UK.

Special guests presenting the awards were John Furbisher, editor of the Halifax Evening Courier, Roger Harvey, OBE, Deputy Mayor Nader Fekri and Helen Owen, vice chair of the College’s governing body.

Among the award winners were Kelly Drahosz from Lee Mount, who overcame dyslexia to gain qualifications in level 2 Hairdressing and Craig Davies from Todmorden who passed all his Electrical Installation level 3 exams early and with distinction, to become Adult Apprentice of the Year. Laura Robinson from Queensbury was named Young Learner of the Year. Laura, 18, is completing a BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care at Calderdale College.

Fluent in sign language from an early age, Laura interprets for her deaf parents. Earlier this year, Laura had to leave college when her father became critically ill, to remain at his hospital bedside and interpret for him. She attended all meetings with the medical team and helped to design his complex care plan.

“Throughout this, Laura continued to keep up with her college work, often missing teaching but submitting assessments and getting feedback by email”, explained tutor Jan Holden. “She has consistently achieved distinctions, is on target to gain the equivalent of three A-levels at Grade A and has been offered a place at Durham University to study teaching.”
