Women’s Football is alive and kicking in Calderdale. This was made clear in a friendly between Calderdale College Women’s Football Academy and a team from the Ovenden and Mixenden Initiative last night at Illingworth Sports Club.

“We’ve got teams of girls in four age groups, from nine upwards, all football mad, and find it hard to get a game so we’re really grateful to Calderdale College for the chance to play”, said Paul Birchall, Community Link Worker for the Ovenden and Mixenden Initiative. “Five or six of our players are hoping to join the Football Academy post-GCSEs.”

The Calderdale College Women’s Football Academy, now in its third year, combines top quality coaching for 16 – 19 year-olds with academic qualifications in Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Sports and Exercise Science and Public Services. The girls play in the English Colleges Football Association League on Wednesdays so players are still free to play for their local teams at the weekend.

“About half our students play for Bradford City and two had trials for the County Squad last season with one going through”, said Sam Dexter, Women’s Academy coach. “Women’s football is becoming increasingly popular on a national and international level and the friendly between our team and the Ovenden and Mixenden Initiative girls shows that it’s going down a storm here in Calderdale”.
